Interesting Articles, Self-Care

There has been a lot of conversation in the media lately about mental health. Many big celebrities and public figures are coming forward to talk about their struggles with depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. We are so happy that this conversation is on the forefront as we know many people suffer alone. We want to create a safe space for people to come forward with their daily struggles with their mental health. If you are struggling, it is important that you reach out for support. Nobody should ever feel alone in their battle which is why we wanted to start a conversation about mental health awareness to hopefully make people feel safe and supported.

Mental health in South Africa

According to statistics released by the South African Depression and Anxiety group (SADAG), as many as one in six South Africans suffer from anxiety, depression, or substance-use problems. However, SADAG also found that only less than 16% of sufferers in South Africa receive treatment for mental illnesses. There is a huge lack of resources for mental health sufferers in South Africa. This means that a lot of the responsibility of treating mental health falls to community health care providers. We need to create more awareness about effective ways of supporting those with mental health issues especially now during this Covid period. In fact, a recent survey conducted by SADAG found that 65% of South Africans had heightened stress challenges during lockdown with 12% of people reporting suicidal thoughts. Research has found that social communication is one of the most effective ways of dealing with mental health. This partnered with the right support and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Anxiety disorders

We spoke to our in-house health care professional (homeopath) about anxiety; how to recognise it and how to assist with the symptoms of anxiety.

Anxiety is an emotion that is normal. The mechanism of anxiety involves the brain’s reaction to stress and warning the person of possible danger. Occasional anxiety is fine. Every person feels anxious now and again, for example, worrying about a problem at work. Anxiety disorders are not normal. Anxiety disorders cause constant anxiety and fear that is overwhelming. The primary symptom of anxiety disorders is intense fear or worry. These disorders can also cause difficulty in breathing, sleeping, remaining still, and concentrating.

There are different types of anxiety. The three most common types of anxiety are as follows:

  • Generalized anxiety disorder: Excessive worry due to a small or no reason
  • Panic disorder: Fear that is intense and sudden, accompanied by sweating, chest pain and heart palpitations.
  • Social anxiety disorder: Worrying about daily social situations, for example, about being judged by others or being embarrassed.

There are ways to treat anxiety with conventional medicine such as serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). SSRIs work by stopping nerve cells in the brain from reabsorbing serotonin, which is a chemical that plays a vital role in mood regulation.
Antidepressants may also be subscribed. Unfortunately, these conventional medications come with side effects such as nauseous, weight gain, headaches, and fatigue to name a few. This is why people are turning to natural alternatives to assist with the symptoms of anxiety.

Moringa, anxiety and sleep

Moringa contains an abundant amount of the amino acid, tryptophan Tryptophan is an essential amino acid. An essential amino acid cannot be manufactured by the body and must be obtained from the diet.

L-tryptophan is converted to 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) by the body, and then converted to serotonin, melatonin and vitamin B6. Mood can be altered by changes in serotonin levels in the brain. Melatonin is necessary for sleep

Lack of sleep can cause anxiety and anxiety can result in an inability to sleep well

A research study investigated the antianxiety effect of ethanolic extract of Moringa oleifera leaves. The results of the study demonstrated that Moringa oleifera has antianxiety property. The antianxiety effects may be due to its modulation of certain neurotransmitters (for example, serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine) or its antioxidant property
