Understanding Seizures and Epilepsy

Interesting Articles, Our Practitioners, Self-Care

We have seen a lot of patients recently who have been seeking treatment to assist with seizures and epilepsy. This is especially prevalent at this time of the year. This may also be a time of year when more dogs experience seizures due to stress from fireworks, especially on Diwali. We wanted to learn more about the causes and symptoms of seizures and epilepsy and ways to assist with these ailments. We spoke to our healthcare professional (homeopath) for more information and ways to help.

Epilepsy is defined as a seizure disorder. For this condition to be considered epilepsy the person must experience recurrent seizures and The seizures must also not be caused by pre-existing conditions, e.g. severe hypoglycemia.

A seizure is a sudden rush of electrical activity in the brain caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Seizures vary in symptoms and intensity. There are two types of seizures; generalized and partial. Generalized seizures happen when most of the brain is affected by abnormal electrical activity. Symptoms are more generalized and affect more of the body. An example is a tonic-clonic or ‘grand mal seizure. The affected person loses consciousness, the body stiffens, and the person shakes severely due to violent muscle contractions. Partial seizures are an abnormal electrical activity that affects one part of the brain. Symptoms are localized and depend on the part of the brain affected. An example is a simple partial seizure. In this type of seizure, the person may experience abnormal sensation, jerking of muscles, or pins and needles in one arm or one leg. The person does not lose consciousness. Before seizure symptom onset, epileptics may experience warning signs or aura, e.g. blurring of vision, dizziness, headaches, etc. After the seizure, there is a period before the person returns to his normal state, e.g. after the seizure, there may be a period in which the person may experience loss of memory. Many cases of epilepsy have an unknown cause.

CBD and Seizures

Nature’s Releaf CBD calmly interacts with receptors in the endocannabinoid system (ECS), bringing about a balance within the body, restoring homeostasis within the body, and therefore decreasing seizure activity. This CBD may regulate electrical activity in the brain. This is beneficial if there is a surge of electrical activity in the brain, as occurs in a seizure. Regulation of electrical activity prevents over-firing by neurons. Nature’s Releaf CBD may stimulate the production and action of GABA, which is an inhibitory neurotransmitter. This may reduce excessive firing between neurons, decreasing seizures. CBD also has anti-inflammatory properties.

Moringa and Seizures

One of the factors that can trigger seizures in epileptics is nutritional deficiencies. Nature’s Relief Moringa contains a large number of essential nutrients, i.e., vitamins, minerals, amino ac, ids, and essential fatty acids. Supplementing with moringa, daily, can restore essential nutrients within the body. This may assist in the management of seizures.

Lion’s Mane effects on seizures

Lion’s Mane may be effective for overall optimal brain function and health. Good brain function is determined by effective and adequate communication between neurons, which communicate with one another using electrical signals.
