What is Movember?
[/vc_column_text][us_separator size=”small”][vc_column_text]With the month of November upon us, we talk about Movember- an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness around men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer and testicular cancer.[/vc_column_text][us_separator size=”small”][vc_column_text]Before Movember (“Moustache November”) became a global phenomenon over a decade ago, it was a simple idea that was birthed in Melbourne, Australia, during a conversation between two friends over a causal beer, as it were. According to the Movember Foundation, the initial idea was to try and bring back the moustache, since this facial hairstyle had lost its fashionable appeal. This challenge, however, soon grew into something much bigger, and much more meaningful.
The idea was now to encourage men to grow their moustaches to raise funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA). What resulted was the establishment of the Movember Foundation, which has since spread its movement across many other countries and has grown to symbolise support for men’s health issues. Over the past few years, the foundation has repeatedly been ranked as one of the top NGOs in the world.
In South Africa, the Movember Foundation is booming, and every year, thousands of men grow their mos in support of men’s health, including prostate and testicular cancer, physical inactivity, and mental health issues.[/vc_column_text][us_separator size=”small”][vc_column_text]
The notable men’s health issue
[/vc_column_text][us_separator size=”small”][vc_column_text]One notable problem that men suffer from is prostate cancer- cancer in a man’s prostate, which is a gland that produces seminal fluid. It is reported that 1 in every 23 South African men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime and on average, five South African men will die from prostate cancer every day.[/vc_column_text][us_separator size=”small”][vc_column_text]
Are men receiving the support they need?
[/vc_column_text][us_separator size=”small”][vc_column_text]Now, it is also reported that more than 4300 South African men are newly diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. A question that remains is done men receive enough support when it comes to information about prostate cancer.
Most of you might argue that men would seldomly open themselves up to having conversations about their health, or even be open to taking advice, for that matter. A Northwestern Medicine article showed proof that men are less likely to want to visit the doctor compared to women.[/vc_column_text][us_separator size=”small”][vc_column_text]
