Understanding Traumatic Brain Injury

Interesting Articles, Our Practitioners, Self-Care

This is defined as a brain injury resulting from a blow to the head causing bruising or bleeding in or around the brain. This can involve blunt or penetrating trauma to the head. Traumatic brain injury often occurs as a result of a severe sports injury or car accident.

Immediate or delayed symptoms may include confusion, blurry vision, and difficulty concentrating. Below we will take a look at the many different categories of brain injuries.

Types of Traumatic brain injury

  • Concussion: This is the most common type of traumatic brain injury. It is defined as a temporary loss of consciousness or normal brain function, following a relatively slight impact to the head. Common in sports injuries, e.g., contact sports such as rugby, etc.
  • Contusion: This refers to bruising of the brain. Contusions commonly occur with concussions. The damage caused by a contusion depends on three factors: 1. Size of contusion, 2. Location of contusion, 3. How long the contusion persists.
  • Traumatic vascular injury

A haematoma is blood collection outside of the blood vessels.

  • Epidural haematoma: Occurs when blood collects between the skull and the dura mater (the first layer of the three membrane layers that surround and protect the brain. The outermost layer)
  • Subdural haematoma: Occurs when blood collects between the dura mater and arachnoid mater (the second layer of the three membrane layers that surround and protect the brain. The intermediate layer)
  • Subarachnoid haemorrhage: Bleeding into the space between the subarachnoid layer and the pia mater (The third and innermost layer of the three membrane layers that surround and protect the brain)
  • Brain haemorrhage: This refers to bleeding into the brain tissue. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, severe headaches, etc. A coma can occur.

Below we take a look at which product our specialists recommend for Traumatic brain injuries.

  • Lion’s Mane tincture: Stimulates the production of nerve growth factor (NGF) which promotes nerve development and may enable injured nerve cells to heal. Lion’s Mane is also neuroprotective. It protects the nerve cells against damage and degeneration. Therefore, it may protect the brain and lessen the effects of brain injury in those individuals most susceptible to head trauma, e.g., concussions in rugby or soccer players, etc.

  • NR 600 mg CBD pain drops 30 ml: These drops have anti-inflammatory properties. Following a head injury, the brain may swell. Swelling is one of the signs of inflammation. The CBD pain drops may reduce swelling of the brain associated with head trauma. Post-concussion syndrome (a collection of symptoms that develop and persist in some people long after a concussion) is characterized by many symptoms, e.g., headaches. The CBD pain drops may also assist with decreasing the frequency and severity of the headaches. The CBD pain drops may also decrease neuroinflammation or brain inflammation which occurs as a response to brain injury.

  • NR 300 mg CBD Focus drops 30 ml: The CBD focus drops may assist with mental clarity, focus and concentration. Poor memory and concentration are also symptoms of post-concussion syndrome. The CBD focus drops may improve memory and concentration.

  • NR CBD Gut Probiotic capsules: Head and brain injuries can affect the functioning of the gut resulting in chronic disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. The brain and the gut are intimately connected. Traumatic brain injury can therefore cause an increase in intestinal permeability (leaky gut syndrome), impairment of the gut mucosa, etc. An increase in intestinal permeability contributes to the development of autoimmune diseases. The NR CBD gut probiotic capsules decrease gut inflammation, decreasing intestinal permeability and maintaining optimal gut health.

  • NR Moringa Leaf capsules: The NR Moringa leaf capsules contain 92 essential nutrients (vitamins, minerals and amino acids). Supplementing daily with the moringa leaf capsules maintains general health and wellbeing, and decreases inflammation, e.g., neuroinflammation or inflammation of the brain.
