What is a hormone imbalance?

A recent study found that nearly 47% of women aged 30 to 60 have experienced the symptoms of hormone imbalance.  In fact, everyone will experience at least one or two hormone imbalances in their lifetime. Hormone imbalances are normally common during puberty, menstruation and pregnancy. However, some people experience abnormal hormonal imbalances that can be caused by external factors such as stress or hormone medication or medical conditions that impact the endocrine system or glands.  We wanted to look at the symptoms of hormonal imbalance and natural alternatives to assist with the symptoms of hormone imbalance.

Signs of hormonal imbalance

If you are experiencing one or more of the following symptoms, you may have a hormone imbalance and it is important to seek professional help as well as make a lifestyle change:

  • Weight gain – A number of hormonal issues can cause weight gain including an underactive thyroid, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and menopause. Weight gain around the abdomen is a common symptom of a hormonal problem.
  • Fatigue – An excess of progesterone as well as low thyroid levels can make you feel sleepy.
  • Dry skin – As estragon levels fall, sebum production slows down and you may find that your skin becomes dry and flaky.
  • Fertility problems – Hormonal imbalances such as PCOS are the leading cause of infertility in women.
  • Painful periods – painful periods or pain during sex could be a sign of endometriosis, fibroids or ovarian cysts.
  • Headaches – hormonal headaches are linked to a drop in estragon levels.
  • Muscle weakness – muscle weakness is caused by a lack of cortisol.
  • Depression – Changes in hormone production caused by menopause, childbirth and thyroid problems can lead to depression.
  • Low libido – A low libido may be a result of falling levels of estragon and testosterone.

Hormone treatment

If you have any of the above-mentioned symptoms, you may be experiencing some kind of hormone imbalance. There are several traditional treatments for this which can be beneficial but also come with some side effects. Birth control pills that contain estragon and progesterone may be subscribed. These pills may help regulate irregular menstrual cycles and symptoms however they do come with side effects. These side effects can include, but are not limited to; weight gain, spotting between periods, headaches, bloating, and even depression. There is also the option of hormone replacement therapy. These medications temporarily reduce the symptoms associated with menopause such as hot flushes and night sweats. However, these medications also come with serious side effects such as bloating, swelling in the body, leg cramps, feeling sick, vaginal bleeding, and indigestion. With these kinds of side effects, women are choosing more natural alternatives to help with the symptoms of menopause and hormonal imbalances.
